New Registration System For Summer 2026!

We've upgraded to a new recreation program registration system to better support youth and adult programs!

Important for Parents/Guardians:
To register your child for any summer camp, you'll need to:
    1. Create your account *Note: Due to system constraints, only current MTU students, faculty, and staff may use an MTU email. All others must use or create a different email address to create an account.
    2. Add your children as your affiliates (with their date of birth).
    3. Register your child through their affiliate profile (profile options in top right corner), not your own, for any program with an age requirement.

This ensures accurate participant info and correct age group placement. Create your accounts early to be ready!

Additional information on how to create your user account can be found here.

Camp Overview

See the Daily Schedule for the camp's full itinerary details.

Camp runs Sunday - Friday (Commuter only)
After thoughtful consideration, Michigan Tech Hockey Camp will not be offering on-campus housing for players and will focus exclusively on delivering an outstanding daily camp this year. We're thrilled to continue offering the high quality hockey camp tradition that participants know and love! By dedicating 100% of our energy to a full schedule on-ice instruction, off-ice activities and engaging experiences throughout the day, we're excited to provide an even stronger program this year! We look forward to welcoming everyone back this summer and encourage families to explore the many excellent local lodging options for a fun and memorable stay-and-play experience!

Michigan Tech's Group 2 camps are for players looking to gain all of the fundamental skills of hockey! Open to boys and girls birth years 2014 - 2016 with at least one year of organized hockey experience. Participants will need their own water bottle and snacks daily, as well as a small bag to carry them in.

Skaters are given the opportunity to learn forward and defense positions while goalies are given goaltending instruction, with plenty of practice time. Participants learn and practice under personalized direction from Michigan Tech's staff as well as current varsity players, alumni, and guest instructors.

Programs are built around Daily On-Ice Instruction, focusing on power-skating, shooting, passing, positional playing, small area games, competitive battle drills, angling, and defensive play. Off-Ice Programming includes hockey skills, age-appropriate competitive games, and lecture. Full hockey equipment and athletic apparel/shoes required.

Group 2 will be divided into (1) black team and (1) gold team prior to the first day of camp. Both teams stay together for the duration of the week.

  • Locker rooms will be assigned for equipment storage for the duration of camp. Please label all personal belongings.
  • Counselors are assigned to each group and remain with campers throughout the day, including meals. Lead and assistant instructors are present for all on and off-ice activities.
  • The Outdoor Adventure Program partners with Michigan Tech to introduce team-building activities to the participants each day.
  • Special evening activities:
    • Every evening (Monday - Thursday) features special off-site activities, such as Chutes and Ladders (Houghton Waterfront Park), a trip to the Mine Shaft for bowling and arcade games, lawn games at the East Houghton Waterfront Park, and a chairlift ride at Mont Ripley for a spectacular view of the Keweenaw Waterway. Please make sure you come prepared to be outdoors (athletic clothing/light jacket, as well as spending money for snacks and games)! Schedule/activities are subject to change.

Michigan Tech Sports Camps enforces an Authorization to Release policy for all hockey campers. Parents, guardians, and alternative authorized release persons will be the only ones allowed to sign a child out during camp, at the end of each day.

On-Ice Programs

Skaters will have three ice sessions per day (Monday - Thursday) in the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Each session has a different practice plan to ensure skill development in all facets of the game. Each day will conclude with an evening scrimmage to incorporate the skills learned in the earlier sessions. Full equipment required.

Power Skating Instruction

Students participate in a daily program to maximize strength, speed, balance, agility, and proper mechanics to be effective skaters. Players strengthen their forward and backward strides and improve their stopping, turning, and crossover techniques. Drills help develop effective skating, with and without the puck. Goalies will be given the opportunity to work with a goalie coach on technique and position during this time.

Hockey Instruction

Players spend daily ice sessions in stations concentrating on individual skills, including passing, shooting, stickhandling, and goaltending. All on-ice sessions include small-area games and drills designed to get players to compete and battle for the puck. Stickhandling drills emphasize decision-making—puck protection—as well as effective moves.

Performance Testing

Skaters will be timed on fastest lap, top speed, and agility to help players monitor their performance and set goals for improvement.

Evening Scrimmages and Final Game

Scrimmages are conducted Monday - Thursday evenings. A final game will be played on Friday. Coaches introductions, player announcements, and special recognition awards will be presented. A video board show with photos from the week will be on display for the duration.

Off-Ice Programs

Off-ice sessions will help work on the off-ice fundamentals that further help develop a successful hockey player. Sessions are daily and include, but are not limited to, stick handling, passing, shooting, classroom lectures, guest speakers, off-ice team building, and age-appropriate competitive games. Athletic clothing and tennis shoes are required.

Performance Testing

Individual testing is performed for upper and lower body strength, quickness, and agility to help players monitor their performance and set goals for improvement.

Classroom Sessions

Students will attend lectures with the opportunity to listen to and ask questions from special guest speakers. Past presentations included MTU head hockey coach Joe Shawhan and MTU head strength coach, Jordan Ferguson.

Hockey Basics

Off-ice stick handling, passing, shooting, and small area games in the Multipurpose Gym lead by our staff.

Dryland & Age Appropriate Games

Michigan Tech’s Outdoor Skills Center features innovative field drills and exercises that reinforce on-ice techniques and increase players’ agility and stamina.
