Michigan Tech Recreation is excited to offer fitness coaching opportunities for current MTU students and SDC members!

Looking to get stronger, feel better, or just start moving more? Our fitness coaches are here to help you reach your fitness goals — no matter your starting point.

We offer personalized training plans designed for MTU students and SDC members, by professionals who understand the demands of life. Whether you're new to the gym, training for a sport, or just need some motivation, we’ve got your back with one-on-one support, smart programming, and a judgment-free environment.

Fitness Coaching Services

Fitness coaching is an all-encompassing approach to improving health, wellness, and fitness. Our coaches offer a variety of services in both short-term and long-term programs, including

  • Full exercise assessment and consultation 

  • Cardio training conditioning

  • Strength and conditioning 

  • Core, flexibility and balance training

We offer individual or partner training packages. Packages consist of 6 training sessions. Participants must be at least 16 years of age in order to participate. All participants must be current MTU students or SDC members during the duration of the training package. 

Days 

  • Fitness Coaching is offered by semester.

  • Cutoff for Fall 2025 Training is Thursday, December 11th, 2025. All unused training sessions will be void after that date

Times

  • All training sessions will be scheduled during facility operational hours based on the coach and client availability.

  • The duration of each training session will be between 30-60 minutes based on the trainer's prescription per session and the health and physical ability of the individual participant. Beginning sessions may be shorter for this reason. 

Location

  • All training sessions will occur at the Student Development Complex. Training locations within the SDC may change based on the training program design.

How to Request a Training Package

  • Select a coach of your choice and submit a request through the request form below.

    • Participants must be at least 16 years old to participate in the program. Participants must be current MTU students or SDC members during the duration of the training package. 

    • Capacity is limited for inquiries for each coach for the Fall 2025 semester. All request slots are first come, first serve.

  • Each request slot holds a space for one private training session package or partner training package (includes both participants).

  • Once your request has been submitted and processed, a Recreation staff member will contact you with required paperwork and scheduling information.

Meet our Fitness Coaches

Brandon Phillips, Group Fitness Instructor

Brandon Phillips, Fitness Coach

For the last 13 years, Brandon has owned and operated several fitness and fighting gyms in the US, including Fit and Fearless in Austin, TX, and Aloha Krav Maga in Kona, HI. Brandon has over 12,000 hours of group instruction and 1-on-1 coaching. He specializes in coaching athletes of all experience levels, from true beginners to elite-level athletes. His areas of specialty include programs that improve flexibility, mobility, balance, core strength, speed, agility, coordination, cardio/running (POSE running coach), weight lifting (muscular strength), bodybuilding (muscular hypertrophy). No matter what your fitness goals are, Brandon can absolutely help get you there!

Personal Coaching Package (1 participant) - $215

Partner Coaching Package (2 participants) - $162 per participant 

All training packages include 6 training sessions. Training length may vary from 30-60 minutes.
Payment is not due until training sessions have been scheduled.

Em Humes

Em Humes, Certified Personal Trainer

Em is a certified personal trainer with over five years of experience helping clients build strength, confidence, and a more sustainable approach to fitness. Specializing in strength training, muscle building, and powerlifting, she's worked with a wide range of clients both in-person at gyms and online, with a strong focus on one-on-one coaching. 
Currently holding an ACE Certified Personal Trainer credential and CPR/AED certification, Em takes a science-based, holistic approach to training. Her programs aren't built for trends - they're built for real life. Each plan is tailored to the individual, designed to be processable, sustainable, and supportive of long-term growth.
What sets Em apart is her belief that "self-loathing is not a sustainable fuel source." She encourages clients to show up as they are - whether they're feeling strong, tired, uncertain, or excited - and helps them build habits rooted in self-respect, not punishment. It's about showing up and doing the work, and learning to care for your body in the process.
Em especially enjoys working with beginners or those returning to the gym after time away, helping them feel empowered and at home in the weight room. Most clients come in wanting to feel better, stronger, and more capable - and leave with a newfound confidence and sense of belonging in the gym. 
When not coaching, Em enjoys cooking, reading, video games, and spending time with her dog and fiancé. She believes that fitness should support your life - not take it over - and she's here to help clients build strength both physically and mentally.
