Rules - Fitness Center

Requirements for Entry

  • Must be 16 years of age to exercise in the Fitness Center.
  • A valid Michigan Tech Student ID or Access Holder ID 
  • An SDC action pass. Action pass holders will stop at the SDC Ticket Office (during business hours) to get their pass punched and receive a day-use wristband. During non-open hours, proceed directly to the Fitness Center. Present a pass to the attendant to get punched and receive a day-use wristband.
  • And SDC day pass. Day pass purchases can be made at the SDC Ticket Office (during business hours). Customers will receive a day-use wristband.
 

Patron Expectations

  • A valid MTU student ID or Membership ID or Day Pass/Action Pass wristband must be presented to the attendant prior to entry.
  • Patrons are required to wipe down equipment before and after each use.
  • Sweat towels are not available.
  • All bags or belongings will need to be stored outside the fitness center.
  • Report all cardio machine and equipment issues to the fitness center attendant.
 

General Fitness Center Rules

  • All patrons are recommended to get medical clearance and learn the proper use of fitness equipment from a personal trainer if beginning an exercise program.
  • Dress Code: Fitness apparel and closed-toed athletic shoes must be worn at all times. NO OUTSIDE shoes are allowed in the Fitness Center. Bring clean indoor athletic shoes to wear in the Fitness Center. Large jewelry should be removed when using equipment and machines. 
  • No Bags are allowed in the Fitness Center. Bags are permitted to be searched to protect the safety of others. There are hooks for coats and bags in the hallways outside the Fitness Center. Put valuables in a locker.
  • Michigan Tech is not responsible for any lost valuables.
  • Tobacco, food, and drinks (other than closed water bottles) are not allowed in the Fitness Center. No glass bottles. 
  • Maintain a positive and cooperative attitude in the Fitness Center. Take pride and do your part to keep the Fitness Center clean and functional.
  • Cameras, webcams, and video cameras are not allowed to be used unless prior permission is granted from MTU
  • No Chalk in the Fitness Center.
  • Wipe down weight equipment, cardio machine handles, seats, and framework after use with disinfectant wipes. Do NOT use gym wipes to clean cardio screens, this will cause damage.
  • No fitness center equipment is permitted outside of the fitness center.
  • During peak hours, it is recommended to not occupy more than one piece of equipment at a time during a workout. Patrons are NOT to remain on one piece of equipment for prolonged periods. Allow others to share the use of the equipment.
  • Wipe down weight equipment with disinfectant wipes after use.
  • DO NOT spit in the water fountain.
  • Due to liability reasons, no outside personal training is allowed in the fitness center. Only Michigan Tech Recreation-employed personal trainers have the authority to train patrons in the fitness center.
  • No horseplay, foul language, or inappropriate behavior is allowed.
  • Athletic teams may not use the fitness center as a group. No more than 5 team members will be allowed in at one time.
  • Loitering is not permitted in the fitness center.
 

Cardio Equipment Rules

  • No dumbbells or weights are permitted on any cardio machines.
  • A 30-minute time limit on all cardio machines when other patrons are waiting.
  • Know your limits. Use a safety clip on treadmills if you are new to exercise or have limitations.
  • Do not turn your head when walking or running on cardio machines. This could cause you to lose your balance.
 

Weight Training Rules and Fitness Etiquette

  • Learn the proper use of fitness equipment. Read the instructions posted on each equipment piece, and start with minimal weights. It is highly recommended and beneficial to schedule an appointment with a Michigan Tech personal trainer. 
  • Know your limits. DO NOT lift beyond your capabilities. Seek assistance from a spotter whenever necessary.
  • Use weight collars to secure weight plates on barbells.
  • DO NOT SLAM or DROP weights. Patrons should use weights that they can control throughout the entire exercise motion.
  • Return all weight plates and dumbbells to the proper storage racks and horns. DO NOT mix weight plate sizes on storage horns.
  • DO NOT BOUNCE medicine balls against walls. Walls are not structured to handle impact.
  • Weight belts are not permitted on weight equipment other than for squat racks, and free motion activity. ex. deadlifts
  • DO NOT stand too close to mirrors while using weights.
  • Replace all cable attachments to storage towers or hooks. DO NOT leave on cable machines. Heavy attachments can pull cables off pulleys.
