Participants (or parent/guardian if the participant is under age 18) must sign a waiver of liability and concussion awareness form prior to participation. American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Blended Learning Course
Earn your American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification in this intensive training course located at the Michigan Tech SDC Pool. The certification includes Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certifications and all training materials. All participants must be 15 years of age or older by the first date of the course (documentation required).
Required water skills include the ability to:
- Swim 150 yards (using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, swimming on the back or side is not permitted, swim goggles are allowed), maintain a position on the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water with the legs, swim 50 yards (using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both).
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (face may be in or out of the water, swim goggles are not permitted).
- Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using the ladder or steps.
Online training prerequisites must be completed by the first day of classroom instruction. The instructor will contact class participants with online course information and directions. Class size is limited. Contact Annie Bengry, Aquatics Manager, for more information.

Need to get re-certified? Sign up now for the Red Cross Lifeguard Review Course. This course includes Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED re-certification. The instructor will contact the class with additional course information and directions. Participants must have a Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification that has expired no more than 30 days prior to the final day of the course. Class size is limited to 10 participants. CPR mask and whistle not included. Supply purchase is available through the ticket office.

The Student Development Complex lap pool and dive tank are licensed by the State of Michigan and inspected by the Western U.P. District Health Department. Accordingly, the water is analyzed and the temperature is taken daily. The new heating system keeps the water at a constant 82-83 degrees.

About the Aquatics Manager
Ann Bengry comes to Michigan Tech from Saginaw Valley State University, where she served as the Assistant Swimming and Diving coach for the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons. At SVSU, Annie led the sprint group and coordinated the Cardinal Aquatic Swim Lessons program. Annie attended Saint Leo University, where she served as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the Men’s and Women’s Swimming teams from 2015-2018. While earning her Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in Sports Business, she helped assist in coaching multiple All-American student-athletes and guided several student-athletes to national qualifying performances.
Prior to Saint Leo, Annie, a native of Marquette, MI, served as a volunteer coach for Northern Michigan University’s Women’s Swim Team while earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Science.
A former collegiate swimmer and diver, Annie also trained for three years as an Olympic weightlifter at the US Olympic Training Site at Northern Michigan University. Annie has also served as a swim coach, lifeguard, swim instructor, and aquatics assistant at the YMCA of Marquette County and the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA. She is a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor® and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor® Trainer.
